Maritozzi are bread like soft desserts, made with a few ingredients and stuffed with delicious whipped cream.
They are made exclusively in Rome, and they are served mainly as a street food.
Here is the recipe to prepare this amazing dessert. It is suggested to add more aromas if you desire, since the more aromas you put in the dough, the better it will be.
Orange peel, raisins, anise, juniper, these are some of the flavors you can add to make an outstanding Maritozzo. You’re also free to add diced strawberries on top of the whipped cream.

The ingredients needed for this recipe are:
400 gr. White Flour
12 gr. Brewer’s Yeast
200 gr. Milk
120 gr. Water
150 gr. Sugar + 100 gr for the cream
4 Whole Eggs
120 gr. Vegetable Seeds Oil
400 gr. Cream
1 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Salt
40 gr. Honey
1 Grated Lemon Peel
To prepare this recipe, these are the steps to follow:
1.- Mix the Honey with the vanilla, and in a medium sized bowl mix together the white flour, the brewer’s yeast and the salt.
Mix and blend the ingredients together before going on.
2.- Now add the milk and the water and start to knead.
3.- Add one egg at the time, and make sure to add each egg only after the first one is absorbed by the dough.
4.- At this point add the honey and the grated lemon peel.
5.- Once the dough is ready, leave it into the bowl, cover it with a rag and allow to raise for 3 hours in a warm spot.
6.- Once the dough has doubled its size, cut it into 100 gr. Pieces, and shape them like pressed ovals.
7.- Let them raise again for 1 hour, then brush them with egg wash and cook in the preheated oven at 170°C for 35/40 minutes.
8.- Whip the cream until it is well mounted, and then add the remaining 100 gr. Of sugar to it.
9.- Cut each Maritozzo in half, and fill it with whipped cream, with the help of a sac a poche.
